Box of 'King George' chocolates

1924

RCIN 230263

Chocolate has been enjoyed as a luxury item since the 1600s, however it didn’t become a popular Valentine's Day gift until the nineteenth century. This diminutive box of King George Chocolates dates from 1924 and measures only 0.6 x 2.7 x 2.0 centimetres.

These chocolates were made to stock the cupboards of Queen Mary’s Dolls' House, created by Sir Edwin Lutyens (1869–1944) between 1921 and 1924, and which contains thousands of objects made by leading artists, designers and craftsmen of the day. Although this box might not be big enough to share, chocolates always prove a popular gift.

The income from your ticket contributes directly to The Royal Collection Trust, a registered charity. The aims of The Royal Collection Trust are the care and conservation of the Royal Collection, and the promotion of access and enjoyment through exhibitions, publications, loans and educational activities.
