BERNARD PICART (1673-1733)

A pair of lovers

RCIN 913109

This romantic scene was painted by French printmaker and publisher Bernard Picart (1673–1733), and depicts a pair of lovers seated under a tree. This is one of four love scenes by Picart in the Royal Collection which may have originally been created as designs for costume prints, depicting figures in fashionable dress.

This watercolour can be seen as a variation of the fête galante, a French genre of painting in which amorous courtly figures are depicted in idealised rustic settings.
