Tea in the Royal Collection

The ritual of tea drinking as represented in the Royal Collection

QUEEN CHARLOTTE OF WÜRTTEMBERG, CONSORT OF FRIEDRICH I, KING OF WÜRTTEMBERG, 1ST DAUGHTER OF GEORGE III, KING OF THE UNITED KINGDOM (1766-1828)

Travelling breakfast service

c.1812-13

RCIN 54421

This travelling breakfast service – which includes a tea caddy, cup and saucer – was decorated by Queen Charlotte of Württemberg (1766–1828), the eldest daughter of George III. A keen artist, she was regularly supplied with blank porcelain plaques, which she decorated and gave to family members as gifts. Here the plaque has been added to the top of the breakfast service and sent to her sister, Princess Augusta, whose initials AS (Augusta Sophia) are engraved on the gilt-metal mounts of the cut-glass.
