This panel is one of seven in the Royal Collection depicting the Old Testament history of Queen Esther. In this episode, Esther's adopted father, Mordecai, is honoured at the expense of his enemy Haman. Haman hoped to kill Mordecai, but was instead instructed by the king to lead him through the streets in royal robes and riding on the king's own horse. A number of sets of this series were produced at the Gobelins workshop in Paris between 1738 and 1794, and this example was among the last to be woven. The tapestries were sold abroad during the French Revolution and eventually acquired by George IV (1762–1830) in 1825, with more than 30 other pieces of Gobelins craftsmanship.
