An informal photograph of Queen Alexandra (1844-1925) when Princess of Wales, carrying her daughter Princess Louise (1867-1931) on her back. Before Princess Louise's birth on 20 February 1867 at Marlborough House, her mother was extremely ill with rheumatic fever. This illness had serious long-term effects, affecting her mobility, particularly her right knee and her deafness, which was hereditary and slight to begin with, began to worsen. This photograph was taken in September 1868 to show that the Princess had recovered from her illness, and it was very popular when it became available for sale to the public.
