BBC Radio Shropshire
Following his famous defeat at the Battle of Worcester, Charles II fled to White Ladies and Boscobel House in Shropshire to try and evade capture by Oliver Cromwell's troops. Hiding in various guises, including in a Royal Oak in Boscobel Wood above the heads of his pursuers, Charles successfully escaped to France.
To complement the Royal Collection Season on the BBC Royal Collection Trust's Senior Curator of Paintings, Vanessa Remington, discussed Robert Streeter's painting Boscobel House and White Ladies, which was commissioned by Charles II to commemorate his momentous escape.
