This photograph is from an album presented to Queen Victoria (1819-1901) in 1880 by the Viceroy of India, Robert Bulwer-Lytton, Earl of Lytton (1831-91). The photograph depicts the main street and covered bazaar in Jalalabad, the capital of the Nangarhar Province of Afghanistan. The photograph is considered one of the earliest taken in Afghanistan. The photographer, John Burke (1843-1900), was initially employed in the British Anglo-Indian army as an apothecary, before turning to a career as a photographer.
