Princess Beatrice was the youngest daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. She became her mother's constant companion following Prince Albert's death in 1861. Princess Beatrice married Prince Henry of Battenberg in 1885, but their marriage was ended by the Prince's untimely death in 1896 during the second Ashanti war. This photograph taken in the grounds of Balmoral depicts Queen Victoria sitting in open carriage with (l-r) Duchess of York, Princess Francis Joseph of Battenberg and Prince Francis Joseph of Battenberg. When Queen Victoria died in 1901 Princess Beatrice dedicated the rest of her life to editing and transcribing her mother's private journals.
