To pass time in the trenches, many soldiers made carvings out of materials they had to hand. This token depicting the Madonna and Child is made from the bone of an ass and was carved using a pocket knife and a packing needle. It was carved by Piper Corporal James Butti of the Black Watch in Macedonia in 1917. He was killed in action in France in October 1918, only eighteen days before the Armistice.
