In Germany portraits of monarchs were often circulated after they died as commemorative prints or as part of mourning books. This engraving commemorates the death of Magdalene Sibylla of Saxony, Duchess of Saxe-Altenburg (1617–68): the figures of Death and Time stand beside her portrait, with a view of her lying in her coffin below.
