William III and Mary II

In 1677, Princess Mary, the eldest daughter of James, Duke of York, later James II, married her cousin, William III of Orange. In 1689, she followed her husband to England to take up the Crown as joint Sovereign of England, Scotland and Ireland. Mary died in 1694 and William ruled alone until his own death in 1702. The reign of William and Mary brought Britain and the Netherlands into a personal union and a close co-operation developed between the countries.
