After his Restoration, Charles II began to reacquire some of the works sold following his father’s execution, commissioning new works and purchasing others from around Europe. This inventory of the King’s pictures at Whitehall Palace in 1666-7 shows just how determined he was to re-establish a Royal Collection. It details around 450 pictures and other paintings, arranged by room, with those in store listed at the end. Occasionally, the provenance of paintings is included, those presented by the Dutch in 1660 for instance are marked as “Dutch presents”.
