Sarah suffered from poor health and in 1851 returned to Africa to attend the Female Institution in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Aged 12 Sally returned to England, where she was placed with Mr and Mrs Schon at Chatham.

This photograph shows Sarah Forbes Bonetta, aged about 13, as it was captioned in the nineteenth century in ink, 'Sally Bonetta Forbes', and dated 1856.
