This photograph shows the Maharaja Duleep Singh's children. From left to right they are: Princess Bamba Sofia Jindan (1869–1957), Prince Edward Albert Alexander (1879–93), Princess Catherine Hilda (b. 1871) and Princess Sophia Alexandra (1876–1948). The children of Maharaja and Maharani Duleep Singh grew up as part of British aristocracy.

Princess Sophia and Catherine both became active suffragettes and Princess Sophia was a member of the Women's Social and Political Union and the Women's Tax Resistance League. On 18 November 1910 Sophia took part in the first deputation to the House of Commons, 'Black Friday', alongside Emmeline Pankhurst, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson and other campaigners. She was also regularly seen selling The Suffragette outside Hampton Court Palace, where her family lived. Sophia's activism continued throughout her life and included campaigning for the welfare of Indian soldiers during the First World War.
