Birthday celebrations for Henry of Battenberg (‘Liko’), husband of Princess Beatrice included tableaux-vivants (living pictures), a popular form of entertainment in which costumed performers staged static scenes from plays. For Liko the tableaux were to represent the letters of his two names Henry Maurice. The ‘R’ in Maurice was represented by scenes from Romeo and Juliet, performed by Princess Maud of Wales and Sir Fleetwood Edwards. Shakespeare continued to be a popular source amongst the royal family for this type of entertainment.
