After the death of Prince Albert the wearing of miniatures took on a central role in the etiquette of bereavement and mourning. Discover why Queen Victoria remained so in love with this art form in this sumptuously illustrated catalogue featuring over 1,000 miniatures in the Royal Collection.

This fully illustrated catalogue is the first major study of portrait miniatures from the Victorian era and includes more than 1,100 miniatures dating from 1837 to 1901 in the Royal Collection. It traces the last great flourish of this art form during Queen Victoria's first two decades on the throne, and describes its survival in the face of competition from the fledgling art of photography. This book draws extensively on unpublished material from the Royal Archives, including Queen Victoria's journal and correspondence and surviving inventories and accounts. A fascinating read for collectors, art historians and anyone with an interest in the history of the period.
