FRANCIS FRITH (1822-98)

Self-Portrait in Turkish Summer Costume

1857

Albumen print | 12.0 x 16.2 cm (image) | RCIN 2701283

This is the title page of Egypt, Sinai and Palestine, a rare supplementary volume to the second edition of Frith’s work originally published in 1859, containing photographs and text produced during the course of three expeditions to Egypt and the Near East between 1856 and 1859. Frith's choice to appear in ‘Eastern costume’ partly follows the Orientalist artistic tradition, exemplified by figures such as Lord Byron and David Roberts, but at the same time helps support his credibility as a traveller to the East and as a ‘truthful’ photographer.
