Charles I, 1628 and Henrietta Maria, 1630

Five weeks into his reign, Charles I (r. 1625 – 49) married Henrietta Maria (1609 – 69), sister of Louis XIII of France. Shortly after their marriage Charles I commissioned the Dutch artist Daniel Mytens to paint the king and his new wife, and subsequently sent the portraits to Holland to be engraved. Charles I’s rule descended into Civil War after 1642, culminating in the king’s beheading in 1649.
