BARON CARLO MAROCHETTI (1805-67)

The hands of the Duke of Wellington

circa

RCIN 7879

Marochetti appears to have modelled Wellington's hands in this distinctive crossed arrangement while the Duke was sitting for a portrait, and copies were created throughout the 19th century. Wellington remained a favourite at court until the end of his life, acting as godfather to Queen Victoria's third son, Prince Arthur, who was named after his patron.
