Admiral George Cockburn commanded HMS Northumberland, which conveyed Napoleon to his exile in St Helena. He spent much time with Napoleon on the long voyage and noted down their conversations. In this extract, he records celebrating the Emperor’s birthday, and discussing Napoleon’s planned invasion of Britain.
