Distant View of La Belle Alliance from the Spot where Buonaparte rallied the Imperial Guard

1816

RCIN 750740.d

A print showing the field of Waterloo, looking towards La Belle Alliance, from the spot where Napoleon rallied the Imperial Guard. The elite Imperial Guard answered directly to Napoleon, and were undefeated in battle. At around 7.30pm, Napoleon ordered them to advance. The repulse of the Guard by the British was a decisive moment of the battle, sending panic through the French lines, which began to retreat.

One of a set of twelve prints of the battlefield produced by R Reeve after drawings by Samuel Wharton.
