SIR FRANCIS CHANTREY (1781-1841)

Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852)

signed & dated 1835

RCIN 35332

After Wellington's victory at Waterloo, the nation voted him a residence in Hampshire, Stratfield Saye. Instead of rent, the Duke was asked to present a single banner to the monarch on the anniversary of the battle each year, an arrangement which continues to this day. Traditionally the most recent banner, embroidered with the date of presentation, is displayed in the Queen's Guard Chamber, Windsor Castle above the bust of the first Duke (RCIN 35332).
