RICCIARDO MEACCI (1856-1938)

The wedding of the Duke and Duchess of York, 1923: a symbolic representation.

1922/3

RCIN 933827

This triptych was commissioned by Violet Cavendish-Bentinck, the unmarried sister of Lady Elizabeth’s mother, as a wedding present for the Duke and Duchess of York. Ricciardo Meacci was a Florentine painter who specialised in highly detailed watercolours in the style of Renaissance paintings. Here the arms of the Strathmore and the British royal families are set side by side in the tree above the bride and groom in the central section, with the date of the wedding, 26 April 1923, inscribed on banners at the top
