JOHN PIPER (1903-92)

The Scuola and Chiesa di San Rocco, Venice

c.1959-60

RCIN 453396

Details of windows and door-cases in this view of the Scuola and church of San Rocco in Venice are deftly suggested by graceful white lines. The watercolour washes behind seem to dissolve and run down the paper, so that the picture becomes a meditation on the effects of light reflected in water which are so characteristic of Venice. Piper presented this work to Queen Elizabeth in 1962, following a visit she made to his home, Fawley Bottom, near Henley-on-Thames.
