DAVID JONES

The outward walls

dated 1953

RCIN 453574

David Jones was a painter, illustrator, printmaker and poet. His subjects were often everyday scenes, like this suburban back garden seen from an upper window. The delicate, tremulous lines, characteristic of Jones’s style, hint unsettlingly at restlessness and instability. Queen Elizabeth was probably introduced to Jones’s work by Sir Kenneth Clark, who was a great supporter of the artist.
