Sandringham Hall in Norfolk became a royal residence in 1863 when the Prince and Princess of Wales, later King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, moved there shortly after their wedding. The original Georgian building was soon found to be too small for the demands of a growing family and the Prince of Wales’s frequent house-parties. The Hall was demolished and Sandringham House, a brick structure in the Jacobean style with gabled roofs, was completed in 1870. John Piper presented this lively drawing of the house to Queen Elizabeth in 1970.
