AUGUSTUS JOHN (1878-1961)

Robin

c.1912

RCIN 450310

As John’s career progressed he worked increasingly as a portraitist; Queen Elizabeth herself sat for him during the Second World War. John became one of her favourite artists, and she purchased this chalk drawing of the artist’s son Robin in 1941. The drawing had been brought to her attention by her friend Sir Jasper Ridley, who often informed her of modern British pictures on the London art market.
