Thirty-three years after Mabel Hankey first painted a portrait of her as a child, Queen Elizabeth commissioned the elderly artist to make a watercolour copy of a favourite portrait photograph. This had been taken by the fashionable photographer Cecil Beaton in the summer of 1939, shortly before the outbreak of World War II.
