WILLIAM DRING (1904-90)
On leave
signed and dated 1942RCIN 453579
William Dring was employed by the Ministry of Information as an Official War Artist between 1941 and 1945. Usually working in pastel, he drew portraits of naval recipients of battle awards, who, as ordinary servicemen, were often overlooked in military portraiture. This pastel of sleeping sailors was purchased by Queen Elizabeth from a charity sale held in London during the Second World War.
