Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon spent much of her childhood at Glamis Castle, twelve miles north of Dundee, which has belonged to the Lyon family since the fourteenth century. The oldest surviving parts of the castle date from 1372, although it was remodelled in the seventeenth century by the 3rd Earl of Strathmore, who added the distinctive turrets with conical roofs. This view shows the castle as it looked when Lady Elizabeth lived there as a girl. Tall yew hedges are still a characteristic feature of the gardens at Glamis.
