AUGUSTUS JOHN (1878-1961)

Dorelia, standing

c.1907-10

RCIN 453278

Augustus John was one of the outstanding draughtsmen of his generation. After studying at the Slade School of Art in London between 1894 and 1898, where drawing from the life model was considered to be of fundamental importance, John’s work continued to be based on figure compositions, which he drew with great facility. This graceful drawing represents John’s mistress Dorelia, who often posed for him.
