HUGH BUCHANAN (B. 1958)

Desks in Royal Lodge

signed and dated 2000

RCIN 453573

From 1952 Queen Elizabeth used Royal Lodge as her weekend home. This view shows the interior of the Saloon, the oldest surviving part of the house, designed by George IV’s architect Sir Jeffry Wyatville in the 1820s. Queen Elizabeth’s own desk stands in the foreground. The drawing was commissioned from Hugh Buchanan, an artist renowned for his atmospheric and technically accomplished interior views of country houses, and presented as a hundredth birthday present to Queen Elizabeth from the Royal Household.
