JAMES ROBERTS (C. 1800-67)

The Marble Corridor, Osborne House

dated 1852

Watercolour and bodycolour over pencil | 26.0 x 36.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 923463

In this scene, the lively children – probably the Princesses Louise and Alice and their brother Prince Alfred – and a small dog provide an effective contrast to the static, monumental marble sculptures displayed on pedestals along the corridor. The calm waters of the Solent are glimpsed through the doors at the end.
