The son of Victoria’s watercolour teacher William Leitch, Richard received a royal commission in 1860 for three views of Jersey ╩╗according to the Queen’s requests╩╝, which suggests Victoria probably specified the subjects. One of the views was this romanticised scene of the impressive castle with a sleeping fisherman on the quay, where the royal yacht had anchored for a night during a tour the previous summer.
