The son of Victoria’s watercolour teacher William Leitch, Richard received a royal commission in 1860 for three views of Jersey ʻaccording to the Queen’s requestsʼ, which suggests Victoria probably specified the subjects. One of the views was this romanticised scene of the impressive castle with a sleeping fisherman on the quay, where the royal yacht had anchored for a night during a tour the previous summer.
