Two months after the Great Exhibition opened, Victoria and Albert were the guests of honour at a ball held by the Lord Mayor of London on 9 July to celebrate its success. Victoria described the Guildhall as ʻbeautifully decorated & crowded with peopleʼ. This watercolour was probably presented to them as a memento of the occasion.
