Queen Victoria visited Baveno, Italy from 28 March to 23 April 1879, staying at the Villa Clara on the shores of Lake Maggiore. On 23 April 1879, the Queen left the Villa Clara and travelled by carriage to Arona where the royal party boarded a train to Paris, travelling through the Alps. In her journal entry of that day, Queen Victoria describes how from the train they "had the magnificent view of the Alps, with Monte Rosa before us, — so magnificent, as to be worth alone coming to see!".
