ADOLPHE JEAN BAPTISTE BAYOT (1810-71)

The entry of Queen Victoria into Paris, 18th August 1855

1855

Pencil, watercolour and bodycolour | 32.6 x 47.7 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 920059

Victoria and Albert’s ten-day visit to Paris did not get off to the best start due to transport delays. We see them here travelling in open carriages down the Boulevard de Strasbourg in daylight amidst cheering crowds. In fact it was nearing twilight when the procession took place, and many spectators were discontented from their long wait to see the British royal family.
