CARL GEORG ANTON GRAEB (1816-84)

A distant view of Potsdam at sunset

1858

Pencil, watercolour and bodycolour | 31.6 x 43.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 920706

Graeb’s sunset view of Potsdam, framed by trees at left and right, is atmospheric and romantic. It was a present from Prince Albert to Victoria at Christmas in 1858. During their stay in Germany earlier that summer, the Queen recorded in her journal that ‘Potsdam lit up by the setting sun looked splendid’.
