Prince Albert died in the Blue Room at Windsor Castle. The room was thereafter preserved by the Queen ‘as a living beautiful monument’ to her husband. Ludwig Gruner was commissioned to paint angels on the ceiling and a bust of the Prince by William Theed was placed between the beds. The room was to remain largely unchanged for the next forty years.
