ATTRIBUTED TO ZANOBI STROZZI (1412-68)

The Madonna of Humility with Angels

c. 1440-50

RCIN 400039

Prince Albert acquired this painting as by Fra Angelico, one of the most celebrated and sought-after early Italian artists. It is now thought to be by an associate working in Fra Angelico’s style. The Virgin Mary is humbly seated yet also honoured as Queen of Heaven. Gruner framed it and no. 100 with the same design, using carved and gilded ornaments applied to an azure ground.

Purchased by Prince Albert in 1845
