WILLIAM DYCE (1806-64)

The Madonna and Child

Signed and dated 1845

RCIN 403745

This picture was particularly singled out for praise by Queen Victoria who described it as ‘in the style of Raphael – so chaste & exquisitely painted’, and herself made a copy of it in pastel. The Virgin was originally painted bare-headed. Her hairstyle can be seen through the white paint of the headscarf which has become more transparent over time.

Purchased by Prince Albert in 1845

No. 54
