All eyes are fixed on a boy who has interrupted the church service by dropping a metal spinning top onto a monumental brass. Although working here in oils, Cruikshank is best known for his imaginative book illustrations and scathing caricatures. In 1820 he was paid £100 by George IV ‘not to caricature His Majesty in any immoral situation’.

Purchased by Prince Albert in 1850
