Queen Victoria is pictured alongside Victoire, duchesse de Nemours, first cousin of both Prince Albert and the Queen, who described her as ‘like a dear sister’. As a member of the French royal family Victoire was forced into exile after the revolution of 1848 and thereafter lived at Claremont House in Surrey until her premature death at the age of thirty-five in 1857.

Commissioned by Queen Victoria and presented to Prince Albert on his birthday, 26 August 1852
