EDWARD HENRY CORBOULD (1815-1905)

The Coronation scene from Meyerbeer's Le Prophète

dated 1850

RCIN 451109

Queen Victoria saw Le Prophète on a number of occasions. She was particularly impressed by this climactic scene, set in Münster cathedral in 1534, in which the Prophet, John of Leyden, challenges his followers to assassinate him if he is not who he has claimed to be. The crouching figure on the left is John’s mother.

Commissioned by Prince Albert and presented to Queen Victoria at Christmas 1850
