The painting shows that while the artist had worked in Antwerp he had also studied Italian art in Rome, particularly Raphael. The ruined palatial setting symbolises the replacement of the Old Law of David with the New Law of Jesus Christ. Prince Albert hung this and no. 107 in the Gallery of the new Private Chapel at Buckingham Palace.
