Saint Sebastian

c. 1480

RCIN 403487

The Croatian artist Parentino worked at Mantua, and must have known the court artist Mantegna. This painting of the Roman officer being shot for his Christian beliefs was inspired by Mantegna’s version (Paris, Louvre). It was thought to be by Mantegna when Queen Victoria bought it through Ludwig Gruner.

Acquired by Queen Victoria and presented to Prince Albert on his birthday, 26 August 1847
