ROBERT THORBURN (1818-85)

Queen Victoria (1819-1901) with Prince Alfred (1844-1900) and Princess Helena (1846-1923)

Signed and dated 1847

RCIN 406891

Queen Victoria is portrayed as a Raphaelesque Madonna, with Princess Helena as the Christ child and Prince Alfred as the infant St John the Baptist carrying his traditional reed staff. Thorburn pioneered a new flattening technique which allowed him to produce miniatures on ivory of a greater size than ever before.
