The kneeling Virgin with loose hair, the Christ Child lying on the ground radiating light, and Joseph holding a lamp, are derived from the vision of the fourteenth-century Swedish mystic St Bridget. The artist worked in Bruges and may be identified with Guillaume Benson, who is documented in that city between 1544 and late 1574.
