EDWARD HENRY CORBOULD (1815-1905)

Memorial portrait to the Prince Consort

dated 1863

RCIN 927595

Edward Corbould’s painting shows the Prince as a knight of Christ, sheathing his sword, his battle complete. The text beneath, taken from St Paul’s second letter to Timothy, expresses satisfaction for a life well lived and just expectation of a heavenly reward. The painting was placed in the Blue Room at Windsor, where the Prince had died.
