Maharaja Dalip Singh

The youngest son of Maharaja Runjit Singh, Dalip Singh (1838–93) was declared Maharaja of the Punjab in 1843, but renounced his sovereignty in 1849 in exchange for a British pension. He settled in England in 1854. Marochetti’s first, coloured version of this bust was rejected by Queen Victoria.

Commissioned by Queen Victoria and presented to Prince Albert on his birthday, 26 August 1856
